Course Description and Purpose

The MUL 1010 music class presents the most relevant elements necessary to have an appreciation of music and its main composers through the early periods of music to the current genres of music of today. It is designed to allow students to learn about musical processes and style in order to increase their listening and critical skills.

In addition to the classics, this course will address other popular current musical styles and explore their social, historical, and cultural context in music, literature, and fine arts.

Course Objectives

This course, MUL 1010, is in the Humanities Group One requirement of the University Core Curriculum (UCC) at FIU.

It is expected that students demonstrate their ability to think critically by establishing their interpretive ability and understanding of the music terms as explained and presented in the classroom. The student’s grade reflect their understanding of the most relevant composers through history, in addition to the main components of music, and its application.

Throughout the fundamental view of the historical periods from ancient to present-day, the students are encouraged to exhibit their ability to discern about different styles and mediums of music. Group discussions are an important part of this class.

As a result of their reflections, discussions, and assignments, students will have a better understanding of the historical conditions that created these styles and will identify the cultures from which they emerged, thus demonstrating competency in critically assessing the human condition.

The main intent is to open a wide spectrum of musical experiences to students throughout the course.

Late reports are accepted with a penalty of between 30% - 60% deduction. Please do not include dates about a particular composer. When discussing a composer, do it  in reference to the times that he or she lived. It is important to see the composer's life through his/ her social, cultural, and political perspectives during the times they lived. Finally, when discussing a composer's work, I am interested in reading about your awareness of the presence of the basic elements of music and of the ensemble, which is very important in the process of appreciating music! Ask yourself: "What instruments are involved in this work? If the work is contemporary, describe the role of modern instruments such as electronic ones.

On the other hand, if you disagree with a comment, please provide an explanation.

Assessments

In order to mitigate any issues with your computer and online assessments, it is very important that you take the "Practice Quiz" from each computer you will be using to take your graded quizzes and exams. It is your responsibility to make sure your computer meets the minimum hardware requirements.

All assessments will auto-submit when (1) the timer runs out OR (2) the closing date/time is reached, whichever happens first. For example, if a quiz has a closing time of 5:00 pm but the student begins the exam at 4:55 pm, the student will only have 5 minutes to complete the quiz.

Assessments in this course are not compatible with mobile devices and should not be taken through a mobile phone or a tablet. If you need further assistance please contact FIU Online Support Services.

Exam 1 and Exam 2 will be conducted online . Exams will be opened for you for a week. You have two attempts for each exam and the highest grade will be recorded. Each exam constitutes 50 multiple-choice questions. Once you begin the exam, you have 60 minutes to complete and submit the exam. Questions are randomized and every student will receive a different set of questions.

You can view your grade after the availability period has ended. You will only be able to see your scores.  The question text will not be displayed.

You cannot make up a missed exam. However, special cases may be considered.
