Course Description and Purpose

This course will examine the causes and consequences of international trade. We will use both the core and new models of international trade as a tool to understand why and how countries trade, what they trade, and who gains from trade. Moreover, we will investigate trade policies and restrictions. The effects of tariffs, quotas, subsidies, and international agreements will be discussed.

Important Information

Policies

Please review the FIU's Policies and Netiquette webpage. The policies webpage contains essential information regarding guidelines relevant to all courses at FIU, as well as additional information about acceptable netiquette for online courses.

As a member of the FIU community you are expected to be knowledgeable about the behavioral expectations set forth in the FIU Student Code of Conduct.

Technical Requirements and Skills

One of the greatest barriers to taking an online course is a lack of basic computer literacy. By computer literacy we mean being able to manage and organize computer files efficiently, and learning to use your computer's operating system and software quickly and easily. Keep in mind that this is not a computer literacy course; but students enrolled in online courses are expected to have moderate proficiency using a computer. Please go to the "What's Required" webpage to find out more information on this subject.

Access to MyLab and Mastering is REQUIRED for this course. An e-version of the textbook is already included in the package when you purchase the access to the content of this course on My Lab and Mastering, so purchasing a physical copy of the textbook is not necessary; however, should you still prefer, you could purchase/rent the physical version of this textbook separately elsewhere (e.g., Amazon.). Regardless of how the access code is purchased, students have to register on MyLab and Mastering through Canvas course homepage. MyLab and Mastering offers free, temporary access for a trial period of about 14 days. All the coursework accomplished during this trial period will be preserved when the registration is renewed. It is a student's sole responsibility to promptly renew their temporary registration to avoid the disruption of their coursework progress.

Expectations of This Course

This is an online course, meaning that most of the coursework will be conducted online. Expectations for performance in an online course are the same as for a traditional course; in fact, online courses require a degree of self-motivation, self-discipline, and technology skills that can make them more demanding for some students. Though I have no doubt that you will achieve great results.

Students are expected to:

  • Review the Getting Started information located in Modules
  • Introduce yourself to the class during the first week by posting a self-introduction in the appropriate discussion forum
  • Take the practice quiz to ensure that your computer is compatible with the LMS
  • Interact online with instructor(s) and peers
  • Review and follow the course calendar
  • Log in to the course at least 3 times per week
  • Respond to discussion boards within 2 days
  • Respond to emails/messages within 2 days
  • Submit assignments by the corresponding deadline

The instructor will:

  • Log in to the course at least 3 times per week
  • Respond to discussion boards within 2 days
  • Respond to emails/messages within 2 days
  • Grade assignments within 1 week of the assignment deadline

Course Detail

Course Communication

Communication in this course will take place via the Canvas Inbox. Check out the Canvas Conversations Tutorial or Canvas Guide to learn how to communicate with your instructor and peers using Announcements, Discussions, and the Inbox.

Discussion Forums

Keep in mind that your discussion forum postings will likely be seen by other members of the course. Care should be taken when determining what to post.

  1. A discussion topic will be posted on Monday at the beginning of every week and will be available for students to respond until the due date specified in the weekly modules.
  2. You can participate in discussions in two ways: 1) Posting a new thread OR 2) Posting a response to other students’ postings
  3. You are expected to participate on every topic by EITHER posting a new thread OR posting a response to other students’ postings.
  4. You are expected to make 5 postings in total throughout the semester: 3 new threads and 2 responses to other students' posting.
  5. Each posting should be a minimum of three paragraphs. Word totals for each post should be in the 400-500 words range. Whether you agree or disagree explain why with supporting evidence and concepts from the readings or a related experience.  Include a reference, link, or citation when appropriate.
  6. See the calendar for Discussion dates.

When posting, please remember:

  • Be organized in your thoughts and ideas.
  • Stay on topic.
  • Provide evidence of critical, college-level thinking and thoughtfulness in your responses or interactions.
  • Avoid summarizing.
  • Be aware of grammar and sentence mechanics.
  • Participation alone is not enough; a thoughtful, meaningful, and respectful approach in your posts is required.

Your participation will be graded on according to the following criteria:

Excellent (4.5 - 5)
Good (3 - 4)
Needs Improvement (1.5 - 2.5)
Poor (0.5 - 1)
0
Overall ImpressionAuthor directly addresses main question or issue, and adds new insight to the subject not provided in lectures, readings, or class discussions. The author has retained nearly all of the knowledge presented in class. He/She is able to synthesize this knowledge in new ways and relate to material not covered in the course.Author competently addresses main question or issue, but does not add much new insight into the subject. That said, it is clear that the author has learned a great deal in class and is able to communicate this knowledge to others.Author attempts to address main question or issue, but fails. The author has retained some information from the course, but does not fully understand its meaning or context and cannot clearly convey it to others.Essay does NOT address main question or issue, and it is obvious that author has not retained any information from the course.

PLAGIARISM

ArgumentEssay contains a clear argument—i.e., lets the reader know exactly what the author is trying to communicate. An argument is present, but reader must reconstruct it from the text.Author attempts, but fails, to make an argument (e.g., starts with a rhetorical question/statement or anecdote that is never put into context). No attempt is made to articulate an argument.
EvidenceProvides compelling and accurate evidence that convinces reader to accept main argument. The importance/relevance of all pieces of evidence is clearly stated. There are no gaps in reasoning—i.e., the reader does not need to assume anything or do additional research to accept main argument.Provides necessary evidence to convince reader of most aspects of the main argument but not all. The importance/ relevance of some evidence presented may not be totally clear. Reader must make a few mental leaps or do some additional research to fully accept all aspects of main argument. Not enough evidence is provided to support author’s argument, or evidence is incomplete, incorrect, or oversimplified. Information from lectures and readings is not effectively used.Either no evidence is provided, or there are numerous factual mistakes, omissions or oversimplifications. There is little or no mention of information from lectures and readings.

Assessments

In addition to 5 discussion essays, there will be 5 exams and 10  quizzes in total.  Note that there is no homework for this course. The homework for each chapter on Canvas and Mylab are just for practice. It is highly recommended that you attempt the homework and the study plan for each chapter even though they are not graded. Please see the table  in Grading section in this syllabus to learn more about what assignments are graded and what each assignment's weight on your final grade. There will not be a make up exam if you miss the due date or the late submission due date. Submissions after the late submission due date will not be accepted either.

Exams: There will be 5 exams: Exam 1, Exam 2, Exam 3, Exam 4, and Exam 5. There is no final exam. All exams are graded and mandatory. There is no final exam. Exam 5 will be completed in the final exam week.

  • Please see the calendar for exam dates. Each exam must be taken before the previously announced due date. Once an exam becomes available, you will only have a few days to complete the exam. There is a standard late submission policy for each exam, which is 20% of the total grade deduction if submitted after the due date.
  • The duration of each exam is 75 minutes.
  • You will be able to see your scores and correct answers to questions after the availability period has ended.
  • There will be one attempt for each exam and each exam should be finished in one sitting.
  • Respondus Lockdown Browser will be used for all exams.. Please visit follow this link (Links to an external site.) to learn how to use Respondus Lockdown Browser.
